    Applicants who successfully meet the qualifications for lateral entry by the application deadline will be screened by Department personnel. A list of recommended candidates will be submitted to the Board of Police Commissioners for consideration. Oral interviews before the Board are the next step, and will be scheduled within 3-4 weeks.

    Applicants who successfully complete the oral interview will be required to undergo a background investigation and polygraph. Should the Village provide an applicant with a conditional offer of employment, the applicant will be required to complete a psychological examination, as well as a complete physical examination and drug test. Any hired applicants will be subject to all relevant Morton Grove policies and procedures, as well as any applicable collective bargaining agreement (CBA).

  • LATERAL ENTRY POLICE OFFICER
    JOB ANNOUNCEMENT
  • Salary and Benefits:
    Terms, benefits, and other conditions of employment for Morton Grove Police Officers are governed by Village policies and the current CBA. Effective Jan 1, 2024, starting salary is $80,275 with a top pay of $111,827 reached in six years (Steps). Lateral entry officers may qualify for starting pay increases. Officers who have completed two years of prior service as an officer will start at Step 3 of the CBA’s salary schedule ($94,306). Officers who have completed three years of prior service will start at Step 4 ($101,847). Officers who have completed 4 or more years of prior service will start at Step 5 ($108,134).

    In addition, the Village provides excellent fringe benefits including a pension plan, other retirement savings options, and health, dental, and life insurance. Officers are also eligible to earn annual vacation time, paid holidays, and floating holidays. The Village also provides officers with a uniform allowance of $850 per year. Officers are eligible for up to $2,400 additional longevity pay for years of service.

    Current Police Officer Work Schedule:
    8 hour work schedule. Assignment to permanent patrol shifts. 6 days on duty, followed by 3 regularly scheduled days off.

    Specialty Assignments:
    Patrol Officer, Evidence Technician, Breathalyzer Operator, Range Officer, Defensive Tactics Instructor, Tactical Medical Instructor, Peer Support Team, Community Liaison Officer, Tactical Officers, Detectives, Field Training Officer, Juvenile Officer, Traffic Officer, Drone Operator, Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT), North Regional Major Crimes Task Force (NORTAF), Northern Illinois Police Alarm System (NIPAS), and the Narcotics and Currency Interdiction Team (NARCINT).

    Qualifications and Requirements:

     Currently is or within the past two years from time of application has been a sworn officer in good standing in an Illinois law enforcement agency for at least one year after completion of a probationary period and at least two years in total and separated from that agency in good standing; and

    Possess a State of Illinois Law Enforcement Officer certification by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board; and

    Possess substantially equivalent skills and abilities as a Village of Morton Grove Police Officer who has completed the probationary period, as determined by the Village; and

    Possess an Associate Degree or 60 semester hours of credit from an institution accredited by the US Department of Education; or has served in, and received an Honorable Discharge from a branch of the Armed Forces of the United States; and

    Taken and passed such examinations as the Morton Grove Board of Fire and Police Commissioners deem necessary to determine fitness for duty as a police officer; and

    Meet all State and Federal eligibility requirements to be a law enforcement officer; and

    Be at least 21 years of age and possess a valid Illinois Driver’s License; and

    Have the ability to pass the Peace Officer Wellness Evaluation Report (POWER) Test.

    Minimum Requirements and Qualifications

    Submit at time of application: a copy of the following, to the extent applicable:

    • Law Enforcement Officer Certificate issued by the Illinois Training and Standards Board.
    • College transcript, indicating successful completion of a minimum of sixty (60) semester hours of college credit from an accredited degree granting college or university as listed by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (www.chea.org) or the U.S. Department of Education (www.ed.gov).
      (Courses below the 100 course level or those from a trade school and/or technical school are not applicable toward the required college credit.)
    • Certified birth certificate issued by a unit of government (usually the State or County of your birth).
    • All legal name change documents, if name is different from Birth Certificate.
    • Proof of United States Citizenship (U.S. Birth Certificate, U.S. Passport or Naturalization Papers).
    • Driver's license (with an identifiable photograph).
    • Naval or military service board and discharge papers (DD-214/Copy 4).
    • Police Officer Wellness Evaluation Report (POWER) Test Card issued within one calendar year (Northeastern Illinois Public Safety Training Academy, Joliet Junior College, Triton College). If unable to schedule (POWER) test at a testing site prior to application deadline, contact the Morton Grove Police Department at pdhr@mortongroveil.org to conduct test at the Morton Grove Police Department.

    Ability to furnish upon request: other professional licenses, training certificates, documents confirming work experience, certified college transcript, and any other employment related material as requested or required.

  • Selection Process 

    Each phase of the process is pass/fail and required to proceed to the next.

    • Review of application materials
    • Assessment Review Panel comprised of Police Department staff
    • Preliminary background investigation
    • Oral Interview before the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners
    • Background investigation, to include a polygraph
    • Post-offer examinations, including but not limited to: psychological assessment; medical examination; and drug screening
  • Final Eligibility List for Lateral Entry

    Upon completion of the aforementioned criteria, eligible candidates will be placed on a Final Eligibility List for Lateral Entry, ranking candidates by their relative excellence as determined by the Board.

    The Final Eligibility List for Lateral Entry will be posted.

    The lateral entry candidate with the highest ranking on the Final Eligibility List for Lateral Entry will be considered tied with the highest ranking candidate from the Final Eligibility List (Entry Level) for purposes of appointment to a vacancy by the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners.

    Applications will be valid for one (1) year from the due date of acceptance by the Village of Morton Grove. Such applications for Lateral Entry will be accepted as needed and determined by the Village.
